What to Expect
How Do Braces Work?
There are many types of braces, but traditional braces are the most common. Metal brackets are temporarily glued to each tooth. Then, a metal arch wire is threaded through each set of brackets and attached with small rubber bands. Adjustments are made when the wire is tightened, causing pressure on the teeth. The entire process only happens once and takes about one hour. After that, you’ll have regular, brief appointments.
Are Braces Painful?
Getting braces is not like surgery. The only discomfort from braces comes from shifting the teeth through pressure. While having braces, you will visit your orthodontist every few weeks to have the braces adjusted and tightened. As your teeth become familiar with their new position, there can be a little bit of tension. Fortunately, this only lasts for a few days following the appointment. After that, discomfort is either minimal or non-existent.
During this time, it’s best to eat very soft foods, and take ibuprofen if necessary. If there is any poking from the braces, you can use orthodontic wax to avoid rubbing.
How Do I Clean My Braces?
Taking excellent care of your teeth and braces is imperative to having the best experience possible. It can be tricky to clean your teeth with hardware on, so it’s important to take special care during treatment.
Food gets caught in the braces and can be difficult to remove. Be sure to brush and floss your teeth every day, and perhaps after each meal to go the extra mile. This can be time consuming, but there are products that can help enhance the process.
Floss is critical for dental hygiene. Proxabrushes, or very thin tooth brushes, work well for getting into small crevices in the brackets and teeth. To take it to the next level, invest in an oral irrigator. These electronic devices use a stream of water to flush debris out of tight areas in the mouth. They should be used to support brushing and flossing for extra cleanliness. These devices will assist you in maintaining excellent dental hygiene throughout your treatment.
